Clients should be familiar with the regulations and requirements to avoid any complications with their shipment. In this article, we will cover the regulations on used household goods and personal effects, restricted/dutiable items, prohibited items, motor vehicles, boats and yachts, pets, electronics, and the necessary documents required.
Used Household Goods and Personal Effects
Used household goods and personal effects can be imported duty-free if the owner of the goods has been living abroad for more than two years. If the goods haven't been used for at least six months prior to importation, they may be subject to taxes.
Documents Required
- Passport, which shows a departure from the Dominican Republic that occurred more than two years ago
- A packing list, written in Spanish or English, that describes all items being shipped
- A sworn affidavit stating that the goods are used and have been owned by the shipper for at least six months
Restricted/Dutiable Items
The following items are subject to taxes and may require special permits:
- Alcoholic beverages
- Tobacco products
- New items
- Foodstuffs
- Agricultural products
- Firearms and ammunition
- Currency exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent
Prohibited Items
The following items are prohibited from importation to the Dominican Republic:

Motor Vehicles

Boats and Yachts
Boats and yachts can be imported duty-free if the owner of the boat has been living abroad for more than two years. If the boat hasn't been used for at least six months prior to importation, it may be subject to taxes.

Pets
Pets are allowed to enter the Dominican Republic but require specific documents to do so. All pets must have a certificate of health that was issued no more than two weeks before entry. If the pet is a dog, it must also have an up-to-date rabies vaccination certificate.
