Customs Regulations when Moving to Uganda
When it comes to international moving, it's important to be aware of the customs regulations in the country you're moving to. In Uganda, there are certain regulations and restrictions that should be followed to ensure a smooth customs clearance process. Please note that Hercules Moving Company is not responsible for any customs charges.
Used Household Goods and Personal Effects
While moving your used household goods and personal effects to Uganda, there are certain documents that you will be required to provide. These documents include:
- Original passport
- Work permit or residence permit
- Detailed packing list
- Original bill of lading (OBL)
- Original inventory in duplicate
It's important to note that electronics and appliances should have the serial numbers listed on the inventory. Additionally, electrical items will be inspected at the port of entry to ensure they comply with Ugandan safety requirements.
Restricted/Dutiable Items
Uganda restricts the importation of certain items, which include:
- Used tires
- Pornographic materials
- Second-hand clothing
- Beans and cereals
- Meat and meat products
- Firearms and ammunition
Dutiable items include:
- Alcohol
- Tobacco products
- Air conditioners
- Refrigerators
- Televisions
- Computers and laptops

Prohibited Items
The importation of the following items is strictly prohibited:
- Narcotics and drugs
- Counterfeit goods
- Pornographic materials
- Explosives and weapons
- Live birds and poultry
- Plants and plant products
- Soil and sand
Motor Vehicles
To import a motor vehicle into Uganda, you'll need to provide the following documents:
- Import declaration form
- Original logbook
- Proof of ownership
- Bill of lading
- Registration from origin
- Roadworthiness inspection report
- Insurance
It's important to note that vehicles older than 15 years are not permitted in Uganda.
Boats and Yachts
If you plan to bring your boat or yacht to Uganda, you'll need to provide the following documents:
- Original bill of lading (OBL)
- Certificate of origin
- Certificate of ownership
- Marine insurance policy
- Proof of purchase
Pets
To bring a pet into Uganda, you'll need to provide the following documents:
- Import permit from the Ugandan Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries
- Rabies vaccination certificate
- Health certificate
- USDA certification
It's important to note that pets are subject to quarantine upon entry.
